Social media enabled AAG to launch Not Your Model Minority, an event series featuring young APIA people taking action in the course of the 2016 election season. One year later, their platform has developed beyond an Instagram aesthetic into a venture-based collective that empowers APIA folks through activism and neighborhood building. They strive to be a "platform for the voices that are not heard," using social media platforms to spark conversations not often held among APIA people. They host workshops and open coworking spaces so APIA those that cannot meet face-to-face can come together. Lucky Li, 22, a director of programming at Angry Asian Girls, says being a part of the community has given her energy. When she moved to Boston for faculty at Simmons University, Lucky didn't have much aid at the start but assembly other Asians and joining AAG gave her self belief boosts. AAG's mission is not only to empower Asian and Pacific Islander Americans, but it's also about showcasing the intricacies of APIA identity and APIA queer identification. Their work extends beyond Boston and what their followers see on social media--they strive to democratize historical past, culture, and art it is inaccessible to APIA people world wide. Their latest video, "Watch The Most Trending Thing Now Porn Videos," is encouraged by Day Above Ground's music video for "Asian Girlz. " According to Angry Asian Man blog, this video displays "a racialized misogyny it truly is especially offensive to Asian women. " That is why the Angry Asian Girls collective is taking action towards it and raising recognition of political activism underway within APIA communities.

  • The term shunga refers to any erotic picture made by a Japanese artist. These images can be woodblock prints or ink artwork. Many of the shunga depict heterosexual and same sex couples. Others characteristic voyeuristic ghosts, monks, and enthusiastic octopuses. While westerners have a bent to view nudity as uncivilized, the Japanese have a more liberal perspective toward public displays of affection. However, the genre didn't really take off until 1989, when photograph novelist Toshio Maeda exploited a loophole in the Japanese government's censorship guidelines.
