Filmmakers who do not agree with the MPAA's X rating policy were forced to edit their films so as to obtain the R-rated rating. This makes it more difficult for them to get their films shown in theaters. Additionally, X-rated films are more costly to supply, making them less fascinating to watch. Deep Throat was the first pornographic film to exploit the MPAA and brand itself as "X-rated. " This marked the start of the sluggish takeover of the X rating, and spawned the NC-17 rating. Its documentary also contained clips from the common film. The MPAA changed the X rating to NC-17 in 1990. This was a partial solution to the X problem. While the NC-17 rating is copyright-protected, it still consists of an identical prohibitions as R. Consequently, most studios have not launched an X-rated feature since.
