The film is a three-part epic directed by a key figure in the evolution of jidaigeki, Japanese cinema. When it was first published in 1959, critics proclaimed it the finest Japanese film ever made. However, this masterpiece was never re-published and was long thought lost until a condensed print was discovered in 1991. A new generation of viewers could now recognize this timeless masterpiece. The film was nominated for an Academy Award in 1989 and was the first Japanese film to be nominated in the class. The film was also adapted from a singular by Yasushi Sato, who tragically committed suicide in 1990. This trilogy fueled a resurgence of samurai cinema in the early twenty-first century. The film was so successful that riots broke out in Japan. In fact, it became probably the most a success Japanese film of the silent era. Despite its debatable nature, the film is a joy to observe. The cast is spectacular and the cinematography is breathtaking.
