In recent decades, even though, the X rating has gained a terrible connotation. When the MPAA first created its rating system, it failed to protect its emblems. This ended in the X rating being misused. The X rating for pornography was not officially trademarked, but it was utilized by the industry for a number of years before the MPAA dropped it from its list. The X rating for pornography was a response to a petition that was started by a collection of administrators and manufacturers. It was signed by over forty members of the film industry. The group then sent the petition to MPAA chairman Michael Valenti. While the letter was well-meaning, it didn't persuade Valenti to change his rating system. He went on to hold summit meetings with various studios, but he still stands by his determination. This rebranding effort did not remove the ick factor, however. Despite this, hard-core porn films still have the skill to use the X rating.
