The film became a sensation with its mixture of nudity and powerful sexuality, resulting in its X-rating. While this inspired the production of many other films that followed, it didn't exchange "The Godfather. " Its casting of Marlon Brando and a relatively unknown Maria Schneider fearful off imitators and have become the last X-rated movie to tackle sexuality. The film is a combination of personal, political, and non secular themes. The film follows the lives of a middle-aged man who tries to escape bourgeois society. His young wife struggles along with her sexual urges and family ties. She makes little progress in her life and ends up napping with a man with an analogous name as her first love. Although these themes may seem inappropriate to the genre, they're applicable to the film. The film was directed by Bernardo Bertolucci, a man who was 31 years old at the time. He died at the age of seventy-seven. The movie drew much praise for its virtuosity and the progressive artistry it contained.
