Shunga wood-block picturesThe shunga style is a Japanese art form that depicts erotic acts. The word shunga means "spring pictures," and the art form has been commonplace among people of all categories in Japan for hundreds of years. Its popularity has been largely suppressed, though, for almost all of the 20th century. The first large-scale exhibition of shunga was held at a overseas museum in 1904, and the Eisei Bunko Museum is currently hosting one of the crucial extensive shunga reveals in the country. This change in clothing and hairstyles meant that shunga images were not capable of compete with modern erotic images. The earliest known shunga pictures were produced during the Edo period, when Japan was more peaceful. The merchant class had quite a few time and cash to interact in amusement activities. This led to the creation of many color prints depicting features of the Japanese way of living.
