While anime and manga are a positive step forward in the history of sexuality in Japan, there are still many cultural barriers to overcome. For example, the concept of sexual orientation didn't exist in postwar Japan, and the Japanese queer group was not very seen until the influx of American troops. The gay and lesbian groups grew in recognition and Shinjuku Ni-chome in Tokyo became the world's gay town. In 2006, the media started to center around fujoshi. Female manga-ka began to create works with male-male romance. In addition, novice female creators started to distribute their self-created works at the Comiket comic trade conference.
