One movie even featured Helen Mirren describing it as an 'instinctive blend of art and genitals. ' Other films during this category come with immediately-up comedies, overseas films, and dark love stories. While this rating has become synonymous with'mature adult' content material, its history and arguable sexual content have impeded its rise to popularity. Prior to 1996, the age bar for NC-17 films was 17 years old. Currently, most adult/pornographic films aren't submitted for US scores. As of 2021, only 79 films have received the rating. Despite the heightened sensitivity of its content, some films are rated NC-17 for their specific content. For example, Showgirls was rated NC-17 due to the film's extensive use of nudity.
