The agency has been making function films intermittently since 1912. Its best work has been in the 1950s, when it began moving away from kaiju movies and stepping into more mainstream genres like old drama and comedy. In the 1970s, Nikkatsu was in dire financial straits, as the acclaim for television tired its income from its characteristic films. This led the company to show to erotic and salacious content material. Nikkatsu branded this new cinematic genre as Roman Porno - a mix of the French word for novel with the English word for pornography.
