Sex scenes used to be symbolic, with scenes similar to a morning-after scene or a door remaining. Today, however, sex is an important part of a film's plot and actors have become more comfy appearing intimate acts on the screen. There are many different rules about sex in films, and the actors are sometimes blanketed by contracts. These contracts define the parameters of each sex scene, and include true instructions for the studio and actor. Some films have strict instructions about who is permitted to operate certain scenes, akin to no one else. Despite the risks linked to sex in films, Breillat takes a risk in attempting to impress the viewer's thoughts. She points out that the aim of art is to stimulate conception, and that "the idea of nudity" may be erotically charged for some viewers. Sex in films has a long history, and has undergone phases of near ubiquity and scarcity. In the 1960s, sex scenes were often used for shock value. In the 1980s, however, they became commercially viable. They are a must-have to the advancement of cinematic idiom, have helped break new ground in depicting intimacy, and feature often sparked controversy.
