As such, the authors suggest a new approach to convalescing the odds of a task achieving the intended effect. One such technique is to introduce a factor of surprise. Specifically, the aforementioned video-associated pseudo-tasks were preceded by a non-descript, boring task. During this phase, individuals were randomly chose to get hold of either an attention or boredom induction. After completing the test, individuals were asked to rate their state of boredom on a scale of zero to ninety. Researchers then took the resulting data and conducted a simple Wilcoxon rank-sum test to determine the dating between the two circumstances.
