It was ultimately replaced by the NC-17 rating, however the adult industry co-opted the word without the MPAA's permission, and it became synonymous with non-MPAA-rated pornography. This caused most video stores to refuse to stock films that got an X-rated rating. The MPAA's NC-17 rating was created in 1990 to give protection to the general public from extreme violence and sexuality. The MPAA has since copyrighted this rating to keep the pornography industry from using it. However, here's a tough method which can take years to enforce.
