A geisha was more like a courtesan, but with more discretion. A recent study found that in Japan, the number of unmarried adults has reached a record high. Compared to five years ago, 61% of men and 49% of ladies aged between 18-34 were not in a romantic courting. Moreover, one-third of the people under thirty have never dated. In a sense, these numbers are even higher because same-sex relationships aren't counted. In the post-war period, the personality of Japanese women has modified significantly. Western literature has made them into fetishized symbols of Japan. Similarly, sex has changed the nature of the Japanese novel. It has become more erotic than romantic. The author must also avoid reifying Japanese women. In the past, women were anticipated to stay at home until they reached retirement age.
