Its long shots of New York City at the hours of darkness are supposed to create a feeling of dread. The first long shot begins with warm, hazy colors, and steadily progresses into dark, dreary colors. The effect is to conjure a dream state and indicate impending doom. Kubrick's Shame is a mature film about sexuality and an advanced character. It deals with a complex and hard discipline with great sensitivity and a profound message. As a result, this film is rated NC-17. Although there are moments of sarcasm, it isn't a film aimed at a broad viewers. The film is divided into two separate memories. The first hour makes a speciality of the training of US Marines by a man named Hartman, who is abusive to Private Leonard.
