Akiko Takeyama, a researcher at the University of Kansas, has spent the past decade learning the Japanese hosting underground. Her book, Staged Seduction: Selling Dreams in Tokyo Host Clubs, gives readers a peek behind the scenes at this booming industry. Host clubs are run by gay men and are aimed toward the gay community. Foreigners can enter so long as they speak conversational Japanese. The goal is to be as flirtatious and welcoming as possible, and women often end up falling in love with their hosts. Some hosts are reluctant to sleep with clients, but they regularly end up in bed with them. Others try to bypass it at all costs as it means losing their income. In Tokyo's Kabukicho red light district, a host club called Shangrila is a favorite among women. The young men in the club entertain female customers, encouraging them to spend big. In fact, Shangrila's owner invented the champagne call, which is now basic in host clubs across Japan.
