Critics at first reacted negatively to the film, but it later became one of the vital highest-grossing French films. The series persisted, and a sequel, Emmanuelle: The Joys of a Woman, was published in 1975. Despite the initial mixed reports, Emmanuelle became probably the most most popular films in France and across Europe. The Emmanuelle series featured a cast of various sexual orientations, including opium addicts, lecherous drunks, gang-rape and threesomes. In the 1st film, an unknown stripper-actress blew cigarette smoke out of her vagina. Her second film, directed by Francis Giacobetti, featured a more matured, refined Emmanuelle. When Emmanuelle returns home from Paris, her husband Jean asks her if she had any other lovers. She tells him that she has not had lovers while in Paris. However, she doesn't give in to his pressure and tells him that she wants a special lover. The two women begin a sexual dating and end up falling in love. Despite the popularity of the Emmanuelle franchise, the flicks have been met with censorship in some international locations.
