Its best work has been in the 1950s, when it all started moving clear of kaiju movies and getting into more mainstream genres like historic drama and comedy. In the 1970s, Nikkatsu was in dire economic straits, as the acclaim for television drained its profits from its characteristic films. This led the company to show to erotic and salacious content. Nikkatsu branded this new cinematic genre as Roman Porno - a combination of the French word for novel with the English word for pornography. Despite the erotic content, the films are still regarded dramas and comedies. Nikkatsu has been out of company for a few years, but Impulse Pictures is bringing these films back to life on DVD. In addition to DANGAN Runner, the company is freeing the film Aisuru ("To Love"), according to a novel by Endo Shusaku. The author of the novel, who died last month, helped develop the script. The film is being directed by Kumai Kei, a former Nikkatsu director. It is his third Endo version, following Sea and Poison and Deep River. The movie stars Sakai Miki and Watabe Atsuro.
