Since the appearance of electronic photography and the explosion of the cyber web, even though, the horny side of cosplay has become much more seen. Anime cosplayers often take talents of this new found popularity by putting on erotic costumes. They may even go as far as to change their skin color to simulate the surface color of their chosen personality. They also can wear contact lenses that simulate the eye color of the character, causing their pupils to appear bigger. They also can mimic their characters' tattoos and particular markings. Cosplay is a Japanese portmanteau of dress and play, and was first coined in 1984 at the World Science Fiction Convention in Los Angeles. The word was coined by Nobuyuki Takahashi, who saw costumed fans at the conference and wrote about them in his Japanese journal My Anime. Takahashi chose to use the new word cosplay over the existing English word, "masquerade", which interprets as "aristocratic dress. "Anime cosplay has grown in recognition external of Japan. In the West, anime conventions are actually thriving, competing with comic book conventions and technological know-how fiction conferences. Oftentimes, they come with cosplay competitions and dress contests.
