The film, a masterpiece of petit bourgeois cinema, is a triumph of stylistic elegance and social irony. It is perhaps the coolest instance of this genre in modern Japanese cinema. The film is a three-part epic directed by a key figure in the evolution of jidaigeki, Japanese cinema. When it was first released in 1959, critics proclaimed it the best Japanese film ever made. However, this masterpiece was never re-released and was long thought lost until a condensed print was found in 1991. A new technology of audience could now admire this undying masterpiece. The film was nominated for an Academy Award in 1989 and was the 1st Japanese film to be nominated in the category. The film was also adapted from a novel by Yasushi Sato, who tragically committed suicide in 1990. This trilogy fueled a resurgence of samurai cinema in the early twenty-first century. The film was so a hit that riots broke out in Japan. In fact, it became the main a hit Japanese film of the silent era.
