He strongly believed that legal action was the only real positive way to protect young girls and women against obscenity. He was an ardent supporter of anti-pornography, having spearheaded its passage via Congress in 1873. Many consider the invention of the printing press to be responsible for modern pornography, even though there is facts to indicate this art form has existed for much longer than humans were on Earth.
