It is easy to guage Mikey as a morally corrupt character, but his successes become our victories. Red Rocket's significant characters are interesting enough to make the film appealing, however the movie is overlong and could have been edited tighter. Still, the film elements strong performances from Bree Elrod as Lexi, and Suzanna Son as Strawberry. The film also possesses a keen observant of American tradition, and it makes for a compelling, unique, and engrossing film. The film's most distinctive feature is Rex McElhenney's unorthodox functionality as Mikey, a character whose dream is to become a number one man at some point. This may appear funny and heartwarming, but it is just plain wrong. The film ends in a gut-wrenching way. Red Rocket is the newest film by director Sean Baker, who looks at the lives of low-class Americans from a new perspective. Rex is a relative unknown, but his attractiveness, chops, and air of secrecy make him a perfect choice for this role.
