Body dissatisfactionIt's a fact of life that media is a magnificent motivator, and that it has the ability to shape our outlook and our behaviour. For example, a study in 2005 found that media was a primary driver of body dissatisfaction in teens. That same year, a similar study concluded that adolescent girls with high levels of body dissatisfaction were more likely to engage in unhealthy weight manage behaviours. Indeed, a survey of 3,000 women aged 15 to 24 found out that body image was a thorn in the side of approximately 70% of the ladies interviewed. The thorn was the media that promoted unrealistic body image ideals. In specific, the "slim-thick" body ideal, as defined by researchers, was linked to greater body dissatisfaction. A study in France found that social media use was considerably linked to greater body dissatisfaction among teens, with Twitter and Instagram being the most favourite culprits. Furthermore, a similar study in California revealed that teens who were exposed to the "slim-thick" body-image on social media exhibited higher rates of body dissatisfaction in comparison to those that were not. Those who were uncovered to Instagram were also more likely to engage in binge eating, a conduct that is a known risk factor for developing binge eating ailment. As such, a touch bit of social media literacy can go a long way. This is not to say that every one social media users are victims, though.
