The film is a 3-part epic directed by a key figure in the evolution of jidaigeki, Japanese cinema. When it was first released in 1959, critics proclaimed it the biggest Japanese film ever made. However, this masterpiece was never re-published and was long concept lost until a condensed print was found in 1991. A new era of viewers could now appreciate this timeless masterpiece. The film was nominated for an Academy Award in 1989 and was the first Japanese film to be nominated in the class. The film was also adapted from a singular by Yasushi Sato, who tragically dedicated suicide in 1990. This trilogy fueled a resurgence of samurai cinema in the early twenty-first century. The film was so successful that riots broke out in Japan. In fact, it became essentially the most a success Japanese film of the silent era. Despite its arguable nature, the film is a joy to look at. The cast is outstanding and the cinematography is breathtaking.
