In 2011, the Japanese adult video industry produced nearly twice as many films as the U. S. market. The Japanese market also is more willing to spend money on porn, with the standard adult video client spending $157 in 2011 (see Figure 1). In recent years, the Japanese adult video industry has faced increasing scrutiny on account of allegations of exploitation. The government's human rights watchdog lately issued a report on the Japanese adult video industry. It cites cases where manufacturers and actors forced kids to carry out sex acts without their consent. While the Japanese adult video industry is dominated by women, the industry has also seen male porn actors emerge. In fact, about 30 to 70 men work full-time in the XXX industry in Japan. A commonplace Japanese male porn actor will earn about Y=1,000 per movie. The industry is not yet a mature market, however the Japanese are experimenting with new ways to arrive their target audiences.
