The timing of the crackdown also is associated with the Chinese New Year, when the government hopes to promote a harmonious break with family and pals. China's imperative propaganda department (CPD), which is accountable for censorship and guidance dissemination, has also stepped up its crackdown on porn and vulgar content. The CPD interpreted pornography as vulgar, and has shut down over 20 literary internet sites. The government also investigated the web page Sweet Potato Net, which was deemed pornographic. Last year, China's National Office Against Pornographic and Illegal Publications introduced an initiative to scrub the online. The crackdown targeted more than 60,000 porn sites, and almost 5,000 users were arrested. The crackdown on porn sites is aimed toward fighting the spread of porn online, but critics say China is only tightening its grip on the Internet. China's crackdown on porn has not anything to do with dissent. While the govt is involved about losing manage of the information superhighway, the crusade's common goal is to purge the culture of the Chinese Internet and offer protection to the healthy advancement of minors.
