Chinese information superhighway users, especially those on Sina Weibo, have taken to social media to condemn the crackdown. In their posts, they invoke the class divide and say that Chinese people sell their souls for money. While they might not intend to vilify the ladies undergoing prostitution, Xi Jinping likely shares their sentiment. While prostitution is unlawful in mainland China, the Chinese executive has vacillated over its legal treatment of prostitutes. While a couple of overseas companies have lobbied China's executive to legalise the industry, Chinese society has largely rejected this notion. In Guangdong, law enforcement officials arrested 67 people and shut down twelve brothels. The crackdown began Feb. 10 and is expected to last for three months. Some local executive officers have been thrown out of their jobs, while others have issued public apologies for allowing the industry to flourish. China has many laws governing the sex industry. Many of these laws restrict the sale, solicitation, and purchase of sex.
