The researchers also studied the dating among gender identity, sexual orientation, baseline HIV status, and risk of any STI. They found that men and women who identified as gay or bisexual had greater risk of contracting an STI in comparison to heterosexual and transgender people. In addition, LGB individuals had twice as high a risk of coming up an STI compared to heterosexuals. While gay and lesbian teenagers share many features with their heterosexual opposite numbers, their sexual orientation can raise their risk of contracting an STD. For example, lesbians have a better rate of cervical cancer and STDs than heterosexual women. In addition, lesbians may already be wearing STDs from previous male partners.
