While early Japanese pornography was in large part banned, shunga still thrived, and cutting-edge Japanese museums are hosting the biggest Shunga exhibition of its kind. But how did they become so known? And why is shunga art so typical?Shunga art is exclusive to Japan. While many Japanese governments censored pornography, the follow of shunga remained general. The nation's traditional religion, Shinto, viewed sex as a herbal part of life, and its beliefs made it appropriate for folks to enjoy it in public. In fact, shunga ceased to be a taboo until the 20th century, when homosexuality and pornography became unlawful. Despite their established appeal, shunga wood-block pictures were rarely shown in their usual form. Most shunga prints were one-colour prints, and were often produced by ukiyo-e artists. The technique of benizuri-e printing allowed the production of a limited variety of colours. However, even after 1765, many shunga prints endured to be produced using in advance methods. This was likely an issue of taste.
