Until the 1970s, the X rating was regarded an honor. It was the mark of filmmakers who made films for discerning audiences. In recent many years, though, the X rating has gained a bad connotation. When the MPAA first created its rating system, it failed to give protection to its trademarks. This resulted in the X rating being misused. The X rating for pornography was not officially trademarked, but it was used by the industry for a few years before the MPAA dropped it from its list. The X rating for pornography was a reaction to a petition that was started by a group of administrators and manufacturers. It was signed by over forty participants of the film industry. The group then sent the petition to MPAA chairman Michael Valenti. While the letter was well-which means, it did not convince Valenti to change his rating system. He went on to carry summit meetings with alternative studios, but he still stands by his resolution.
