At times it appears like an ethical train wreck, and it's hard to see how any of the main themes can be appropriately explored. A History of X appeals to insiders of the porn industry, but it is not a good book for outsiders. Some of the stories are lively but sadly miserable, and the book in large part lacks trends. One of the few strengths of the book is its bibliography. The author includes a lot of references to both books and websites.
