It's set over the past days of the Qing Dynasty, and features a rich cast and plush visuals. Filmmaker Tom Yip, Oscar(r)-winning cinematographer, and stunt coordinator Yuen Woo Ping create a film that's both visually impressive and emotionally severe. This ang Lee film follows a family, adding a daughter and sister. One sister is a widow who is married to a filthy rich man. The sisters are sisters, but there's a little "boy talk" between them. Another sister, played by Kate Winslet, is Elinor's antithesis. Her brother, played by Greg Wise, is an attorney and the father of her young daughter. In The Ice Storm, Lee explores the barrier between the 2 sexes, which manifests in the style that Wendy avoids Mikey during sexual exploration. Similarly, the film explores the failure of sex as a form of communique. Although Ang Lee is a prolific filmmaker, he is cautious in regards to the genres he chooses. His films have acquired common acclaim, and many have won many awards.
