The X rating, intended to denote films not suitable for anyone under the age of 17, went from being attached to Academy Award contenders to filling video store spaces observed behind saloon doors. In a worldwide that was still reeling from the death of cinema’s golden age, X-rated movies were a shockingly potent cultural signifier. Not only did they provide a window into a time when moviemakers got a once-in-a-lifetime freedom to explore the sex, violence, and race of an more and more assorted society, but they also provided an outlet for filmmakers who were able to take their art heavily without having to fret about local censorship boards that have been cutting their photos all the way down to ribbons since the art’s advent. X ratings weren't trademarked by the MPAA, so that they were easily utilized by anyone. This made it easy for manufacturers of pornographic films to apply the X to their films. As the 1970s wore on and further and further pornographic films were produced, the X rating became much more frequent. In order to provide their films a more adult-oriented feel, some pornographers started using distinct Xs to point out that the film contained more image sexual content than the simple X. This led to the advent of XX and XXX scores, which essentially meant that the film had much more photograph sexual content than the customary X rating. These were advertised as “hardcore” or “sexy” and were a marketing tool for pornographers to get more attention from their audience. In 1990, the MPAA and the National Association of Theater Owners ceased using the X rating. Instead, they created a new classification called NC-17 which was specifically designed for films that contain extreme violence or specific sexuality.
