The MPAA reclassified X-rated pornography in 1990 to the NC-17 rating. This rebranding effort was meant to take away the "ick factor" that individuals related with the X rating. However, it didn't solve the underlying problem. Some filmmakers continued to liberate works with out an X rating. In the 1960s, filmmakers who created X-rated films were happy with their efforts. They believed that this was a way to make their films more appropriate to discerning viewers. But as the decades went on, the term gained a negative connotation. Filmmakers started to use it to communicate parental concerns. While there is no typical definition of X-rated pornography, the term "adult" was often used to imply a film that contains puerile scenes. A recent instance of this was the movie "Baise-moi," which contained practical scenes of sex and violence. This determination caused numerous controversy, as conservative institutions advised that the law that labeled Baise-moi as an "adult" film will be modified to make it more appropriate for every age.
