A new generation of audience could now appreciate this timeless masterpiece. The film was nominated for an Academy Award in 1989 and was the first Japanese film to be nominated in the category. The film was also adapted from a novel by Yasushi Sato, who tragically committed suicide in 1990. This trilogy fueled a resurgence of samurai cinema in the early twenty-first century. The film was so successful that riots broke out in Japan. In fact, it became essentially the most a hit Japanese film of the silent era. Despite its controversial nature, the film is a joy to look at. The cast is astounding and the cinematography is breathtaking. This film combines numerous ancient references with a modern narrative. It shows how a Japanese family copes with modernity, while also combining mythology and Shinto lore. While it's a period drama, the plot is not overly sentimental.
