7. The film became a sensation with its combination of nudity and strong sexuality, leading to its X-rating. While this prompted the construction of many other films that followed, it didn't substitute "The Godfather. " Its casting of Marlon Brando and a comparatively unknown Maria Schneider fearful off imitators and have become the last X-rated movie to tackle sexuality. The film is a mixture of personal, political, and non secular themes. The film follows the lives of a middle-aged man who tries to escape bourgeois society. His young wife struggles along with her sexual urges and family ties. She makes little progress in her life and finally ends up drowsing with a man with an analogous name as her old flame. Although these themes could seem beside the point to the genre, they're relevant to the film. The film was directed by Bernardo Bertolucci, a man who was 31 years old at the time. He died at the age of seventy-seven.
