This movie has several resemblances to Lolita and A Star Is Born, and it explores similar themes of nymphomania and washed-up stardom. The important character, Mikey, is a charismatic douche. His traits are corresponding to the traits of former President George H. W. Bush, and Baker uses these similarities to establish an ironic parallel among Mikey and the president. It is simple to pass judgement on Mikey as a morally corrupt personality, but his successes become our victories. Red Rocket's critical characters are appealing enough to make the film interesting, but the movie is overlong and could have been edited tighter. Still, the film features strong performances from Bree Elrod as Lexi, and Suzanna Son as Strawberry. The film also possesses a keen observant of American culture, and it makes for a compelling, unique, and engrossing film. The film's most distinctive feature is Rex McElhenney's unorthodox functionality as Mikey, a character whose dream is to become a number one man someday. This might seem funny and heartwarming, but it is just plain wrong.
