The film is part of the existing trend of artsy indie horror films, and the gore is more stated than the brain. Still, X fails to surpass one horror trope, namely that of "slashing the young". This satirical horror movie sets a stressful tone by contrasting a bible-thumping old couple with a ghoulish, pornographic film crew. The premise plays off the puritanical cliche of horror films and sets up a nice comparison among these two groups. The film is homage-heavy and well-made, but it essentially borrows points from a range of independent horror movies. This horror film is not concerning the death of younger women with aging bodies. Rather, it is a commentary on sex and ageism in American culture. It also questions the hypocrisy of puritan values, which condemn sex as a sin and celebrate violence as a God-given right. It makes observations on the similarities among pornography and slasher films, and it avoids the self-aggrandizing superficialities of the genre. X Pornos is a sensible horror film by Ti West. Despite its title, X is an elevated porno film, and is a good take on slasher films from the early 80s.
