Body dissatisfactionIt's a fact of life that media is a magnificent motivator, and that it has the flexibility to shape our outlook and our behaviour. For example, a study in 2005 found that media was a primary driver of body dissatisfaction in teens. That same year, an identical study concluded that adolescent girls with high levels of body dissatisfaction were likely to engage in unhealthy weight control behaviours. Indeed, a survey of 3,000 women aged 15 to 24 found out that body image was a thorn in the side of roughly 70% of the women interviewed. The thorn was the media that promoted unrealistic body image ideals. In particular, the "slim-thick" body ideal, as described by researchers, was linked to increased body dissatisfaction. A study in France found that social media use was considerably linked to better body dissatisfaction among teens, with Twitter and Instagram being the most fashionable culprits. Furthermore, the same study in California revealed that teens who were exposed to the "slim-thick" body-image on social media exhibited higher rates of body dissatisfaction compared to those that were not. Those who were exposed to Instagram were also more prone to engage in binge eating, a conduct which is a known risk factor for arising binge eating disease.
