In this film, Theresa Russell plays a calculating and methodical serial killer who is continually plotting her next kill. One of the film's many highlights is Russell's surprising functionality as the protagonist. The other extremely good aspect of this film is the indisputable fact that both the serial killer and the investigator are women. This contrasts with the sloppy, cynical male detective, Alex Barnes. Another instance of this is After Dark, My Sweet, which was directed by John Foley and according to a novel by Jim Thompson. The film follows a washed-up boxer, Jason Patric, as he turns into entangled in a kidnapping plot. In the film, he meets an alcoholic widow, Rachel Ward, and her menacing uncle, played by Bruce Dern.
