Eventually, the X rating became synonymous with pornography. Originally, the "X" rating was utilized by the MPAA to designate films with an excessive sexual content. This designation was eliminated after the MPAA started to offer protection to movies from censorship, but was soon followed by the "XXX" rating. In time, the MPAA decided to decouple from the X rating and as an alternative issued a new category: "NC-17. " This move to give protection to kids helped the erotic film industry. It was related with pornographyIn the late 1960s and early 1970s, many mainstream films were published with an X rating. Unlike today, when the MPAA does not recognize scores above X, this designation became associated with pornography. Because it was associated with pornography, X-rated films were less likely to be booked by theaters and would lose advertising alternatives. This led to a rise in pornography films with an X-rating. In 1969, the British executive outlawed the ownership of pornographic material, together with videotapes of naked and lewd scenes. The term "extreme pornography" was coined in the wake of the murder of Jane Longhurst.
