The agency has been making characteristic films intermittently since 1912. Its best work has been in the 1950s, when it began moving away from kaiju movies and entering into more mainstream genres like historic drama and comedy. In the 1970s, Nikkatsu was in dire economic straits, as the approval for television tired its revenue from its function films. This led the agency to show to erotic and salacious content. Nikkatsu branded this new cinematic genre as Roman Porno - a mix of the French word for novel with the English word for pornography. Despite the erotic content, the flicks are still considered dramas and comedies. Nikkatsu has been out of company for a few years, but Impulse Pictures is bringing these films back to life on DVD. In addition to DANGAN Runner, the company is releasing the film Aisuru ("To Love"), based on a singular by Endo Shusaku. The author of the novel, who died last month, helped increase the script. The film is being directed by Kumai Kei, a former Nikkatsu director. It is his third Endo version, following Sea and Poison and Deep River.
